Request for Member and Insurance Certificate

Notary Letter

Certificate of Standing

This certificate:

  • Confirms your membership and membership standing in the LSA.
  • States any discipline or competency proceedings pending against you, and the nature of the conduct that is the subject of the proceeding
  • States any disciplinary proceedings taken against you
  • Provides information on any misappropriation of funds or wrongful conversion of property, and whether any claims are pending before the LSA
  • States if your right to practise law is subject to restrictions or conditions, and whether or not these are voluntary or imposed by the LSA

The request for a Certificate of Standing must be made in writing to the LSA by the member or designate. The cost for a Certificate of Standing is set out in the current Fee Schedule. A courier account number must be provided if you would like the certificate couriered. Once the request and payment are received, the certificate will be issued.  Please contact Membership Services to request preparation of a Certificate on an urgent basis. Most requests for Certificates will be processed within 48 hours.

Certificate of Insurance

This certificate acts as proof that the member has professional liability insurance.
There is no charge for a Certificate of Insurance. Requests for the certificate must be made in writing to the Law Society of Alberta.

Notary Letter

Similar to a certificate of standing, a notary letter is commonly required by consulates. Members of the Law Society of Alberta are entitled to two complementary Notary Letters each year. See the current Fee Schedule for information about the cost of additional letters. Request for a Notary Letter must be made in writing to the Law Society of Alberta.

All payments must be made by internet or telephone banking or by cheque payable to the Law Society of Alberta.
