Services for Lawyers | Mentor Program
 The Mentor Program is designed to provide the less experienced lawyer with the assistance of more experienced counsel, and is aimed at ensuring that the public continues to receive quality legal services. The program simply carries on, in a more organized fashion, the long-standing tradition of the Alberta Bar to give such help.
Who may use the Program?
Any active member of the Law Society of Alberta and students-at-law.

How does the Program work?
- It is operated by the Office of the Practice Advisor.
- Between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. a caller may telephone (780) 429-3343 (for Edmonton practitioners) or 1-800-272-8839 (for practitioners outside Edmonton).
- The caller will:
- state it is a "Mentor Call",
- identify himself or herself,
- identify the area of law.
- The caller will receive the name and phone number of two (2) lawyers who have agreed to serve as Mentors.
- If the Mentors can't be reached initially, and the caller requires immediate contact, the caller may call back to the program for additional names. However, it is hoped that Mentors will instruct their staff that calls identified as "hot-line" (e.g. calling from the Courthouse and needing immediate advice) will be put through.
- Regrettably, a caller from a rural centre to a Mentor will be required to pay any long distance charges. If the Mentor has to return a call, the caller must advise the Mentor's office that the caller will accept a collect call.
- On first use of the program, the caller will complete and forward to the program a user's form to be kept on file.
- Program users may be asked to participate in a brief confidential feedback survey.
Conditions of Use
- The Mentor Program and the Mentors accept no liability whatsoever arising from assistance given to callers or to any persons claiming through or under them.
- Callers are obligated to independently verify statements of law, procedure or fact made to them by the Mentor, before relying on them.
- The Mentor Program must not be used as a substitute for the callers' own thorough research and analysis or for the callers' own professional judgment.
- Callers must complete and send the user's form to the Mentor Program (see step 7 above).
